Online 3D printing service Sculpteo has produced 3D printed components for five haute couture looks for Jean Paul Gaultier, printing in TPU and PA12 on HP Multi Jet Fusion and supplying the parts in a raw, unfinished state for the couture atelier to work on by hand.

The brief was geometry the house could not get any other way inside the time available. Gaultier wanted intricate, unconventional forms produced fast and accurately enough that every printed element would align with the rest of the garment, flowing shapes that conventional couture technique can reach only through slow, labour-intensive handwork, if at all. Dimensional accuracy mattered as much as the shapes themselves, because a sculptural part that is a few millimetres out does not sit on a body.
