California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation making California the second US state to mandate firearm-blocking technology in 3D printers sold within its borders.

The law, which follows a similar measure enacted in New York, carries a significant caveat: none of its requirements take effect until ASTM International, an independent standards body, publishes or adopts a technical standard for the blocking technology in question.

That caveat is worth sitting with, because it means California has passed a law whose core mandate remains contingent on a standard that does not yet exist.

The legislation directs the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to begin checking quarterly
