Additional Context

Your printers are only part of the story. Explore what software makes possible at AMA Software 2026.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have publicly released OpenCAL, a build-it-yourself volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM) printer that solidifies a complete part inside a rotating vial of resin in about one minute. The machine can be built for roughly $1,600 in parts. Formlabs manufactures its dedicated photopolymer, OpenCAL Resin, which Prusa Research sells in the United States. All drawings, code, and the resin formulation are publicly available, and the team describes OpenCAL as the first open-source layerless 3D printer.

The printer is based on Computed Axial Lithography (CAL), a process invented in 2017 in Professor Hayden Taylor’s lab in Berkeley’s Department
